Candida is a genus of yeasts. In Latin candidus, candida means clear and whiten, by using a whiteness of pure quartz like than a whiteness of chalk (albus). Candida was the title of the clear-clearheaded, outspoken & candid eponymous heroine of Shaw's 1895 play poking fun at easily-meaning socialist reformers in the Church of England. Candida was also the title of a 1970 song performed by Tony Orlando and Dawn.

Candide is Voltaire's 1759 satirical novel.
